Diagnostic Services
Here at Bruff Veterinary Centre, we have state of the art diagnostic equipment to monitor the health of your pet and to help us in our diagnostic investigations of the sick patient. As well as commonly used diagnostic equipment like stethoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, glucometers, and otoscopes etc, we also have the following diagnostic equipment:
We have a haematology and biochemistry machine. This means we can run a baseline panel in house and have the results the same day. This gives us the information we need, when we need it ! A haematology machine tells us hydration levels, if there is anaemia, or infection present, platelet levels to name a few. The biochemistry machine tells us how the organs are doing and indicates if there is inflammation or any electrolyte imbalances. This information can help us diagnose a problem or they may lead us to our next appropriate step in a diagnostic investigation. They are an essential part, and usually the first step of any diagnostic investigation.
We have a microscope that we use to examine samples from ears, urine, skin lesions , and masses. Depending on the sample type, we use the microscope to assess the cells for abnormalities, and for signs of bacteria or other pathogens or irregularities.
This is a non-invasive, relatively cheap test of the urine which can provide valuable information on the health of the urinary system, and can indicate problems in other organs. It involves analysis of urine dipstick, refractometer, and cytology. Sometimes culture is required depending on the case.
We have a brand new high spec ultrasound machine. Our vets have done further training in small animal ultrasound and we have a keen interest in this area. It is a non-invasive way of performing imaging of all soft tissues eg abdominal cavity and heart (echocardiography) most commonly . This can give us invaluable information to reach a diagnosis and tailoring an appropriate treatment plan in the sick patient , monitoring treatment efficacy (eg heart disease), and pregnancy diagnosis.
