Pet Dental Care
Regular dental care is essential for the overall health and well-being of small animals. Poor oral hygiene can lead to various dental problems, pain, reluctance to eat, and potential systemic infections in your pet. To ensure proper dental care for your small animal patients, we recommend the following guidelines :
Schedule regular dental examinations with your vet, ideally at least once a year. We here at Bruff vet centre, always perform a dental exam during routine or annual check ups. If you notice any signs of dental disease such as changes in eating habits or reluctance to eat, excessive drooling , itching around mouth, smelly breath, or visible plaque/tartar then schedule a dental exam or scale today. These exams allow for early detection of dental issues and provide an opportunity to address them promptly.
We have all the necessary equipment and expertise to provide dental cleaning and extractions for your pet. Dentals are performed under general anaesthesia using a dental machine to remove tartar, and plaque from the teeth. Sometimes tooth extraction is necessary if dental disease is advanced. The teeth are then cleaned and polished. If dental disease is advanced, your pet may need to be placed on antibiotics before and after the procedure to prevent systemic infection.
We can advise you on establishing a home dental care routine to prevent dental disease. This can include daily tooth brushing using a pet-specific toothbrush and toothpaste, Dental wipes, dental rinses, dental toys, and dental chews can also be beneficial. We understand this may not be the easiest task, but if you are willing to do it and you think your pet is amenable it can help prevent problems!
We can advise you on good diet and eating habits. Dry food is preferable. Sometimes, in severe or recurring cases, we recommend dental diets formulated to promote oral health.
We can advise you on monitoring for signs of recurrence and when to do a follow up check.
