Small animal surgery at Bruff Veterinary Centre

At Bruff Veterinary Centre, we prioritise the safety, comfort, and well-being of your pets during any surgical procedure. Our team of skilled veterinarians has extensive experience in performing most surgeries from elective procedures such as neutering, mass removal, etc to emergency interventions such as exploratory laparotomy, wound closures, fracture reduction, etc.

Our vets undertake regular continual education courses to ensure they are constantly upskilling and staying up to date with the most modern surgical techniques. Our team follows strict protocols to ensure the highest standard of hygiene, care, and monitoring throughout the procedure. Here’s what you can expect when you choose BVC for your pet’s surgical procedure:

Pre-operative assessment

You will bring your animal fasting from the night before (for elective procedures). Access to water is fine. Before the surgery, our vets will conduct a thorough examination of your pet to assess their overall health and suitability for the procedure. We may advise running pre-operative bloods in some instances eg. An older patient , or if the history or clinical exam suggests that there is a potential underlying issue that might affect the anaesthetic. We will discuss the surgery and answer any questions you may have and address any concerns.

Surgical expertise

Our experienced vets and team are highly skilled. We employ stringent sterile protocols to minimise the risk of infection and complications. Any surgery that is performed is done with an optimum recovery in mind ; that means we aim for the least amount of trauma possible to tissues, as short an anaesthetic as possible , and minimising risks of infection as much as possible.

Anaesthesia and monitoring

Your pet’s comfort and safety are paramount to us. We use safe and effective anaesthesia tailored to your pet’s individual needs. Throughout the procedure, our dedicated veterinary team closely monitors vital signs, including heart/respiration rate, plane (depth) of anaesthesia , and oxygen levels, to ensure as smooth and uneventful a surgery as possible. We use both clinical expertise and monitoring equipment to minimise potential risks associated with a general anaesthetic.

 Post-operative care

After the surgery, we provide comprehensive post-operative care instructions to help your pet recover comfortably. We will address pain management, wound care, and any necessary follow-up appointments to monitor their progress. Some pets may need to wear an Elizabethan/buster collar to ensure optimal healing of the incision. Depending on the procedure, your pet will either stay on in the clinic for further care but in most cases they will be discharged to your care that evening. Your pet should be kept warm and offered food. It’s not abnormal for them to still be a bit groggy or have a reduced appetite that evening.

Compassionate support

We understand that undergoing a surgery is a worrying time for an owner. Our compassionate team is here to provide guidance, support, and reassurance every step of the way. We prioritise open communication and will address any questions or concerns you may have before or after the procedure.
